Bark and mulch supplies in Chinchilla and Queensland
What’s the difference between mulch and bark?
One of the biggest questions we hear is, “What’s the difference between mulch and bark?” So what’s the answer? Mulch is a universal term given to organic top-dressing materials in landscaping. This includes compost mulch, grass clippings, shredded leaves, sawdust, and bark mulch. Bark chippings and other bark supplies are considered an ‘organic mulch’ and are a subsidiary of mulch in general. While bark is just a form of mulch, there is a distinct difference between the different types of mulch available. The more common types of mulch include:
Bark mulch
Bark mulch comes in various sizes and can often contain several types of wood depending on where the mulch is sourced from. From pine bark mulch to hardwood and cedar types, bark nuggets last longer than shredded bark mulch chips, but can be affected by heavy rains and flooding. Bark chippings and bark mulch are great mulching materials that help retain soil moisture and block sunlight.
Straw
Straw mulch was popularised in residential vegetable gardens as it decomposes quickly and improves overall soil quality and soil health as the straw decays.
Sugar cane
Sugar cane is a mulch that is manufactured using dried sugar cane leaves which encourage helpful soil organisms and over soil quality. Sugar cane is one of the best-looking mulches, providing an attractive finish for garden beds.
Wood chips
Wood chips are perhaps one of the most popular mulching materials given the distinct benefits. Wood Chips provide great moisture control for garden beds and thick layers aid in weed control.
How does mulch and bark work?
Mulch is most commonly known for its residential applications, however, it can be used all across Queensland for commercial applications as well. While there are alternative types, properties, and aesthetics of inorganic and organic mulches, the purpose of top dressing remains the same.
Mulch works by adding a top dressing material to trees, garden beds, and other landscapes - helping to insulate, germinate, and protect. While different mulches have different properties, mulch helps to:
- Insulate soil and landscapes to help provide temperature buffers and protect plant roots
- Protect soil and landscapes from direct sun to aid in water retention
- Prevent soil compaction
- Reduce lawn mower damage
- Retain moisture
- Manage weed growth in your garden bed
Will bark and mulch stop weeds?
Weeds are an invasive nuisance that can steal water, nutrients, and vital resources from plants and soil. Maintaining landscapes where weeds are present can be extremely difficult given the rate at which they appear, how quickly they spread, and how hard they are to permanently kill.
The process of mulching is a natural way to help naturally prevent weeds, help maintain soil, and promote landscape prosperity. When mulching, be sure to make a 2-4 inch top layer to help prevent weeds from sprouting. Blocking access to sunlight through the mulching process prevents weeds from receiving the energy required to break through a thick top layer, stopping weeds at the base level.
