What is Cement?

Whether a project manager for a large construction company or a backyard warrior looking to tackle your next ‘big’ project, you have likely heard of cement. Cement has underpinned construction, infrastructure, and development industries for centuries - being one of the most widely used materials in existence. Cement is an integral part of modern building and design, being used to bind building blocks together and make other construction materials such as mortar and concrete.

Cement is essentially a binding agent that works to set, harden, and adhere materials together for constructive purposes. Cement typically refers to a fine powder-like substance commonly made up of limestone, sand, clay, bauxite, and iron ore. Cement is chiefly sold in large bags of powder, ready for use in concrete and mortar mixes, or occasionally - seldom use.

Cement works through hydration chemical reactions causing the substance to thicken and set when mixed with water. During this process constituents slowly hydrate and mineralys begin to solidify.

Contrary to belief hydraulic cement does not set by drying out but rather a curing process which requires a particular moisture content. If Hydraulic cement does dry out over the course of the curing process, final products may be significantly weakened.

Where can Cement be used?

Cement is traditionally considered the most important material at a construction site and as such, can be used for a multitude of different applications. Typically the most common uses for cement include:

Cement is commonly used through the development of mortar, which is a workable paste used to bind building blocks, seal irregular gaps and can sometimes be used for decorative purposes. Mortar is typically made from cement, water, and lime aggregate.

Cement is primarily used in the creation of concrete, which is potentially the most utilised construction material on earth. Concrete quality is often dictated not only from workmanship but materials, so seeking high quality cement can be vital to a project. Concrete is typically made of cement, water, sand, and gravel aggregates.

Foundation Preparation

Cement is used for foundational preparation across worksites being used to make joints for pipes and drains, waterproofing floors and footpaths, and structural protection.
